Shoulder Nerve Damage

When medical mistakes result in Erb's palsy shoulder nerve damage, consider an Erb's palsy lawyer to evaluate whether your child’s baby stuck in birth canal childbirth could have been prevented.

Shoulder dystocia is one of the most anxiety-provoking emergencies encountered by obstetricians and midwives. Although many factors have been associated with shoulder dystocia, most cases occur with no warning.

Complications resulting from shoulder dystocia during delivery can affect the mother and infant. Postpartum hemorrhage and fourth-degree lacerations are the most common maternal complications. Their incidence remains unchanged by rotation maneuvers or other manipulation.

Among the most common fetal complications are brachial plexus palsies, occurring in 4 to 15 percent of infants. These rates remain constant, independent of doctor or midwife experience. Nearly all palsies resolve within six to 12 months, with fewer than 10 percent resulting in permanent injury.

Among those resulting in permanent injury, usually the injury involves some type of shoulder nerve damage that can affect the infant well into adulthood. While this type of nerve damage during childbirth is not common, it can have long term effects such as limited feeling in the arm, hand or fingers or limited mobility well into adulthood. One prominent example of this phenomenon of nerve damage in shoulder is the American actor Martin Sheen, whose shoulder nerve damage prevents him from extending both arms over his head, and was the result of infant arm nerve damage.

If you or anyone you know has been affected by brachial plexus injury, you may want to consider contacting an experienced Erb's Palsy law firm for advice on any potential Erb's palsy lawsuits.
